Information about Nigerian urban Forests Ecosystem
This IFS grant was used for the development of urban forest web-based information system for managing and monitoring of urban climate change in Nigerian cities. The ecological zones covered by this study are:
  • Rainforest (Ibadan and Port Harcourt)
  • Mangrove forest (Yenagoa)
  • Lowland forest (Calabar)
  • Derived Savannah (Ilorin and Lokoja)
  • Guninea Savannah (Abuja and Makurdi),
  • Sudan savannah (Kano) and ,
  • Sahel savannah (Sokoto).
Urban green infrastructure and vegetation cover are essential components of cities ecosystems, ecosystem services and functions that are important in making built environments more livable, economically, physiologically, and ecologically sustainable. Urban forest ecosystem services include erosion control, flood control, fruits and some fuel wood supply. Urban forests play several roles such as relaxation centres, recreation parks, physical and psychological comfort for the urban population. Urban forests outlook varied based on climatic conditions, culture, vegetation zones and the choice of the individual, Government, Non-Governmental Organization determines the type of trees planted. Urban forest development in Nigeria is considered important due to level of deforestation and degradation of forest reserves and the threat of rapid urban population growth, human activities, difficulty in land tenure system and poor implementation of government policies. This research work was carried out to evaluate the spatial distribution of urban trees in some major cities in Nigeria and the development of computer based web-based information system.
